A recent article in The Independent newspaper in Great Britain reported that the country is now considered to be the most powerful nation in the world.
The article, titled 'Britain is now most powerful nation on earth' explains that the United States was toppled from the number one slot as British influence enhances its 'soft power'.
The article states, 'For the first time, Britain has beaten the US to the top spot in an annual survey of global soft power. Coined by a Harvard academic in 1990, the term describes how countries use attraction and persuasion, rather than coercion or payment, to change behaviour.'
According to Dr Peter Warburton, Chair of Maharishi Foundation UK, this 'soft power' is key.
He said, 'It's not measuring the destructive power, or the ability to get your way by paying bribes to people or throwing money at projects.'
Soft power is markedly different than the military power that Great Britain and other formerly colonizing nations relied upon in the past.
The article explains how soft power is scored:
'The list is calculated using a matrix of 50 factors that indicate the use of soft power. Some are empirical—such as the number of cultural missions, Olympic medals, and foreign students a country can claim; others are more subjective—with countries ranked for the quality of their cuisine, architecture, and business brands.'
Dr Warburton explained further, 'It is particularly measuring influences that a country has in the world on a peaceful level, on a constructive level, on the level of friendship and partnership. It's looking at government diplomacy, it's looking at the culture of a country, looking at the business ethics and business approaches of a country.'
The top five spots on the list of most powerful nations according to these criteria went to Britain, the United States, Germany, France, and Sweden.
Dr Warburton praised the list and the top nations as showcasing a worldwide rise in coherence and harmony in collective consciousness, resulting from increasing numbers of people practising Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's programmes and technologies of consciousness in many countries.
