A course in Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture was recently offered at the Maharishi Peace Palace in Erfurt, Germany. The course was taught by Dr Peter Swan, an international expert in this subject, who designed the course and has taught it in many countries.
The Peace Palace building is the first in Europe built according to the principles of Maharishi Vastu architecture. The historic city of Erfurt, the capital of the state of Thuringia, is located in the centre of Germany, and also lies at the centre of Europe.
The course in Erfurt started with a public lecture, Introduction to Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture and Gardening. From the start Dr Swan emphasized the importance of organic agriculture, explaining that conventional agriculture, with all its toxic treatments to both plant and soil, is poisoning our food supply.
When Maharishi Mahesh Yogi unfolded his principles to create ideal cities, Dr Swan explained recently, reporting about the course in Erfurt, they included living and working in Maharishi Vastu buildings, as well as eating locally grown organic food. Transcendental Meditation teachers at the Maharishi Peace Palace in Erfurt wanted to start an organic garden and located land for that purpose near the building.
Referring to Maharishi's programmes to create world peace, Dr Swan explained that the clarity of individual consciousness, as well as the coherence and health of the collective consciousness of society, are affected by the purity of our food. For this reason Maharishi recommended organically grown food, and he also gave specific criteria for crops grown according to Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture:
∙ The consciousness of the farmer should be in accord with natural law. This means the farmer should be practising Transcendental Meditation, daily contacting the source of total natural law deep within the silence of his own Self. Ideally the farmer would also be practising the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme.
∙ The quality of the collective consciousness of the people should also be in tune with natural law.* Maharishi's programme to create world peace includes the establishment of 3,000 Peace Palaces in major cities of the world, lighthouses radiating peace and coherence in the surrounding community through Maharishi's technologies of consciousness. The Maharishi Peace Palace in Erfurt is upholding this function for the city, as well as for Thuringia, Germany, and Europe as a whole, Dr Swan said.
∙ Special Vedic performances (Yagyas) by Maharishi Vedic Pandits, at eight stages in the growth of the crop.
∙ Research into modern organic agriculture. Dr Swan explained that—as in Maharishi Ayur-Veda health care, Maharishi Vastu architecture, Consciousness-Based Education, and other applications of Maharishi Vedic Science—Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture adopts modern techniques that researchers are discovering which are scientifically proven to be useful and more effective than those used previously. 'Modern science is included in Vedic Science,' he said.
One example of this is the no-till method of farming. Modern research has shown that crops raised without digging are healthier and less susceptible to pests and disease; soil quality improves every year; and the overall method is much more economical and less labor intensive.
Global Good News will continue covering Dr Swan's talk, in which he went on to describe the recent workshop he led at the Erfurt Peace Palace that included no-till techniques.
* Maharishi often characterized Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture as 'agree-culture—agreeing with the culturing intelligence of nature'.
