Over the last several years Branko Cicic, a leading proponent of organic agriculture in the Balkan region of Europe, established a group of organic farmers locally in Serbia and throughout the Balkan Peninsula. In 2009, the BioBalkan Expo, an annual fair held in Belgrade, Serbia, for local organic farmers and biologic businesses to market their produce and wares, was created by the Serbian Organic Foundation, of which Dr Cicic is president. He is also director of the Transcendental Meditation programme in Serbia.

The fair, now the largest of its kind regionally, is a favourite venue for businesspeople who produce organic products and services in the Balkans, and serves as a clearinghouse for them to exchange news and ideas. Guest vendors from around the world, including from Italy, Germany, France, and India, have attended. Although it mainly attracts business people, educational groups also attend to learn about biologic products and organic agricultural practices.

As in previous years, opening remarks at this year's Expo were given by the Serbian Minister of Agriculture, after which he visited several booths to chat with exhibitors and learn about their products. Exhibitors presenting their bio-organic products hailed from Luxembourg, Greece, Italy, India, France, Austria, Germany, and Holland.

A Serbian national television station sent seven crews to cover the Belgrade event—that means seven journalists, seven cameras, and seven audio technicians, Dr Cicic explained, commenting that the media seem to have been inspired by the organic producers' enthusiasm.

The Expo is promoted throughout the year in a weekly television show Dr Cicic produces, titled 'Organic Serbia' (Organska Srbija), featuring footage from the prior year's event.

In 2012 the event was the largest bio-organic fair in southeastern Europe—with 73 national and 13 international exhibitors sharing the rich palette of their products.
