The 16-lesson course on Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture was recently offered in MERU, the Netherlands, with participants from a number of European countries.

Dr Peter Swan, expert in Vedic Organic Agriculture who developed the course under the guidance of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, recently explained the main themes.* Participants spoke about the course from their different angles of expertise in agriculture and the environment.

The main theme is consciousness: Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture is Unified Field-Based Agriculture, Consciousness-Based Agriculture. The farmer practising Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme experiences the field of total Natural Law within himself.

Dr Swan explained* that becoming more fully in tune with that field of total Natural Law which is administering the entire universe, the farmer is able to act as the 'pivotal point' where the climate, the weather, the seed, the soil, the crops; the needs of his family and the needs of society; technology, finance, economy, and law—all the different avenues of knowledge meet together in the farmer, who is interacting intimately with all of them.

'It is only a farmer with fully developed consciousness, with a consciousness that is completely at one with that field of Unity, the field of Unity Consciousness,** who can successfully, spontaneously act in full accord with total Natural Law—and therefore be successful in terms of all those different variables in life that he has to respond to,' Dr Swan said.

Along with this main theme, he explained, was the theme of the evolution of agriculture from what it has been in the past—quite damaging to the soils of the world, which have been degraded by the different aspects of modern agriculture.

Since Maharishi started teaching the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme in the world and the quality of Unity started to be enlivened in the world consciousness, Dr Swan said, 'more and more life-supporting techniques have been developed in agriculture—techniques that require less and less effort and labour and create less pollution, while yielding better and better results.'

In the coming days Global Good News will feature further articles about the course and participants' comments from their own angle of expertise.

* Dr Swan and course participants spoke on the 5 May Maharishi Global Family Chat. Dr Swan is also Minister of Communication of the Global Country of World Peace and host of the daily news show, which is broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.

** Maharishi explains that beyond the familiar states of waking, dreaming, and sleeping are four higher states of consciousness—Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God, and Unity Consciousness—each bringing a new dimension of physiological functioning, experience, knowledge, and fulfilment.
