A variety of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture educational projects are under development in St. Kitts and Nevis—including organic dairy farming and organic sugar production; as well as a sustainable living college, which will train students, growers, and general workers in organic production through Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture.
Dr Richard Shelford, acting National Director of St. Kitts and Nevis for the Global Country of World Peace, recently presented some of these projects, which are part of a proposal made earlier this year to help develop econonomic opportunities for the Caribbean island nation:
* To maintain a sustainable organic dairy farming operation adapted to the geography and climate of the island, which will produce selected high-quality organic dairy products from a healthy, high-quality dairy herd.
The market for these products would be the Caribbean islands, the United States, and western Europe. The market yield for these products has already been established and a contract made with an organic food trading company in the United States, which has offices in the European Union, and established markets for organic commodities throughout the world.
* This company will help support a new St. Kitts Organic Agricultural College, by providing scholarships to students from the island.
This sustainable living college will provide education about organic agriculture to help the island maintain, rejuvenate, and develop the agricultural economic opportunity. 'It will also help the youth of the area realize their full potential, and live in good health, prosperity, and well-being,' Dr Shelford said.
This college and the business opportunity offer sustainability, protection of the environment, and a unique educational experience. The educational programme will be available to the youth, commercial growers, and to workers in general. The college will be associated with Maharishi University of Management* in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, with faculty coming from the US, Europe, and the Caribbean islands.
* Another project for St Kitts and Nevis is a specialty sugar operation: a certified organic sugar plantation, producing sugar processed under the rules of organic food production.
Dr Shelford also said that he will soon start teaching the Transcendental Meditation Programme to some of the 400 Indian students currently studying medicine at a university on the island. Joining him in these and other activities will be a new Teacher of Transcendental Meditation from Denmark.
