Young Yogic Flyers, and practitioners and Teachers of Transcendental Meditation are gaining practical experience in cutting-edge technology of sustainable agriculture by working on a large agricultural initiative that is flourishing in Ukraine.
Speaking at the third IamU* ('I am Universal') conference** held in MERU Holland, a young Yogic Flyer from Holland said the project is a wonderful opportunity to learn from leading experts, create healthy food, and support the programmes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for world peace.
He said that this year there has been good rainfall—much more than usual in the area—and the crop is coming up nicely.
Weeds, pests, and disease are controlled naturally, and water usage is significantly reduced, which reduces the farm's carbon footprint. 'Everything we do in this whole programme leads to a more sustainable way of farming—and at the same time increases yields per hectare and reduces costs,' he said.
'The techniques we use are really the future of organic farming—and not just organic farming, but farming in general.'
Leading soil biologists from around the world are working with the latest advancements in the field to revitalize and restore the soil—and those working on the project are learning this knowledge as well.
'We are implementing new organic technology to restore soil biology. Soil biology is really the essence of agriculture,' he said, 'and it is completely overlooked by [conventional] chemical agriculture . . . and even in conventional organic agriculture it is not treated as it should be.'
Already the results are clear, he said. The control fields grown according to standard organic procedures are not flourishing in the same way as those in which the new organic technologies are being used.
This month the harvest begins, meaning even more positions will be available for young people around the world who are interested in sustainable agriculture.
'It's a great project to work on, and in the last few months since I started the team has been growing,' he said, adding that he hopes many more young people will join them.
In the coming days, Global Good News will feature a talk by a young leader of the agricultural initiative about opportunities for youth to be involved.
*IamU ('I am Universal') is an initiative created by the Global Country of World Peace youth all over the world, to connect, inspire, and celebrate with other like-minded young people the knowledge and programmes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
