Commenting recently that 'the quality of our food sets the tone of our life,' Dr Robert Wynne, Raja (Administrator) of the Global Country of World Peace for Central Vedic America, and Mayor of Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa, USA, introduced Dr Kent Boyum, Chief Minister of Central Vedic America, who coordinates the domain's organic agricultural lands with a federal agency. Dr Boyum then reported on the growing Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture activities in Maharishi Vedic City.
'There are two parts of our operation,' Dr Boyum began, 'row crops and greenhouses.' There are 1,800 acres [728 hectares] of certified organic farmland in the row crops operation—corn, oats, alfalfa/clover hay to replenish the soils and support dairy operations, and soybeans. He showed photos of a big red combine harvesting organic corn, and of 600 acres [243 hectares] of bright sunflowers grown last year. 'We tested generating organic sunflower oil,' he reported, 'and we probably will sell it in bulk to nearby Maharishi University of Management and to the Vedic Pandits' who reside in Maharishi Vedic City.
Another photo showed half of one 540 by 250-foot [165 by 76-metre] greenhouse, filled with lush green tomato plants in the middle of October. Its roof covers two acres [.21 hectares], and the structure features an east entrance and energy-efficient wind turbines. 'The temperature-controlled roof opens automatically, much like an airplane wing,' he said, 'to allow hot air out.' The greenhouses will extend the growing season two months in the spring and another two months in the fall. In addition to tomatoes, they produce red and green peppers, flowers for the Vedic Pandits to use in their peace-creating performances, and other ingredients for their Indian cuisine. Dr Boyum pointed out that the 160-acre [65-hectare] greenhouse operation is a partnership between Maharishi World Peace Vedic Organics and Maharishi Vedic City, serving Fairfield and Maharishi Vedic City.
Dr Boyum said he is 'very much enjoying working with these organic plants, distributing their produce to 45 different places in Iowa, and also working with a firm in the Chicago area. The market will grow; and we will provide for our needs first and then make these products available to others who appreciate and desire these wonderful pure foods.'
