A principal speaker at the recent Scuola Senza Stress (Stress-Free Schools) conference in Milan was Dr Ashley Deans, an international expert in Consciousness-Based Education who was for many years Executive Director of Maharishi School in Fairfield, Iowa, USA.
Dr Deans, who is author of A Record of Excellence: The Remarkable Success of Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, explained that the Consciousness-Based Education curriculum has the distinction of offering students 'a complete education'. The 'container of knowledge', the brain of the student, needs to be fully developed in order for education to be complete, he said. The Quiet Time programme in schools, an integral part of Consciousness-Based Education, incorporates time for the students to practise Transcendental Meditation together as part of their classroom activities.
Giovanna Finocchiaro is the pioneer of Stress-Free Schools in Italy. A teacher at a school in Sicily, she was inspired a few years ago by an article she read about film director David Lynch and the foundation he established to make it possible for schoolchildren around the world to learn the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation technique.
Ms Finocchiaro wanted to bring Consciousness-Based Education to her school, and worked with school officials to realize this goal. The next year students started learning Transcendental Meditation. They practise the technique as a group in school. Her talk at the conference helped the audience understand that Transcendental Meditation is neither abstract, nor experimental. It is a simple, natural technique that anyone can practise. Hundreds of schools in many countries have adopted the Consciousness-Based Education curriculum.
Besides the presentations by educators, two excellent videos were shown that detailed the success of Consciousness-Based Education in high-risk schools. David Lynch was present at the Milan conference, and gave a riveting 30-minute television interview, covering in great detail and with poignant examples, the beneficial effects of Transcendental Meditation for students and society as a whole.
Each presentation brought out the practicality of Consciousness-Based Education through concrete examples of how the programme has transformed schools, students, faculty, and parents; and also showed the audience that implementing this approach in schools in Italy could be readily accomplished and bring similar results for their country.
