UK: Maharishi Free School in top 5 state schools for GCSE art results - The Guardian reports
The Guardian (UK) Translate This Article
31 January 2014
Maharishi Free School in the UK ranked highly on recently released school 'league tables' for the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations taken by students throughout the country.
The league tables focus on schools' performance, based on GCSE examination results from last summer.
A news article in The Guardian noted several results shown in the league tables, including improved performance among secondary schools in England, indicated by fewer schools rated as failing; and good results for several girls' schools.
The article also highlights 'outstanding' GCSE results for Maharishi Free School in Lancashire, where students, teachers, and staff all practise Transcendental Meditation, the cornerstone of the school's Consciousness-Based Education curriculum.
The article reports:
'Education secretary Michael Gove praised the improved performance in school league tables in England as ''a credit to the professionalism and hard work of teachers''. . . .
'The results also revealed some good news for Gove's flagship free schools programme, with an unorthodox free school in west Lancashire achieving some outstanding GCSE results.
'The Maharishi Free School near Skelmersdale was fifth among non-selective state schools with 61% of its pupils gaining A* or A grades in art and design.
'Its curriculum includes three periods of meditation each day for pupils, which headteacher Derek Cassells said was part of the reason for the school's excellent results in art.'
