In his commencement address to the graduating class of 2013 at Maharishi University of Management in Iowa, USA, Senator Tom Harkin praised the university and advised the students on his keys to living successful and fulfilled lives.
Senator Harkin has been a member of the United States Senate from Iowa for 28 years, and both his address and his support for the university were among many topics covered by Dr Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management, in a recent review of the past year's developments.

Senator Harkin encouraged the MUM graduates to 'be a part of something larger than yourself.' While he praised Maharishi University of Management (MUM) for providing students with the technology to know themselves, to go on a journey inward and master their own minds, he also encouraged students to be ambitious in their journey outward.
'Get involved in your local community,' he said. Some of the larger solutions to the world's problems can be solved on a local level. 'Don't wait for someone else to solve the problems we face. . . .
'Think of the amazing impact that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (Founder of Maharishi University of Management) has had on the world,' Senator Harkin said. 'One person with the vision, the energy, and leadership can inspire and move millions of people and change the world.'
He told the students, 'Each of you be that kind of a sparkplug.'
Senator Harkin added that he believes education at MUM has prepared students for a happy and successful life.
'This university has taught you to have the mental strength to transcend the vicissitudes of life, to know yourself. They have prepared you well for that outward journey and you have all proven that you have the talent and the energy to accomplish big things.'
During the graduation ceremony, Senator Harkin also had the opportunity to listen to the speech of the Valedictorian, Kelly Mae Heroux, including her description of the great transformation in her life after coming to MUM. Moved by what she said, Senator Harkin personally requested a copy of her speech.
