Book on Cambodian education documents economic progress, peaceful change

A new book, Maharishi Vedic University in Cambodia: Educational Reconstruction and Social Renewal, showcases, through several published studies, the remarkable positive effect of Transcendental Meditation on university students. These effects include increased nonverbal intelligence, knowledge retention, self-esteem, and general health.

But another result of a large enough group of people practising Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes together can be felt on a national scale. Known as the Maharishi Effect, these group meditations have been shown through scientific research to reduce stress and radiate a peaceful and coherent influence throughout the whole society.

Dr Lee Fergusson, one of the founding rectors of the university, recently explained more about this effect.

Before he spoke about specific studies linking Transcendental Meditation to increased peace in Cambodia, Dr Fergusson cited some widely known statistics.

When Maharishi Vedic University opened its doors in 1993 Cambodia was the poorest country in the world. Since that time, with a large group of students meditating together, the country 'has moved up about 60 or 70 places in the world and is no longer considered a poor country', Dr Fergusson said.
