One reliable sign of success of an institution of higher learning is the success of its students post-graduation.
At Maharishi Vedic University in Cambodia, established in 1993, graduating students have gone on to a wide range of responsibilities in government, business, and sustainable agriculture, said Dr Lee Fergusson, one of the founding rectors of the university, and co-author of a recently published book about it.
Dr Fergusson described three research studies showing the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation in improving students' learning ability, nonverbal intelligence, and mental health. Daily practice of Transcendental Meditation is a central element in the unique Consciousness-Based Education approach provided by the Maharishi Vedic University curriculum from the beginning.
He also noted that long-term effects of Consciousness-Based Education can be seen in the subsequent success of graduating students.
At any given time, he said, there have been about 750 students on campus studying the two main disciplines—management and agriculture. Since the university's founding about 4,000 students have graduated.
According to Dr Fergusson, many of the students have gone on to join the government administration of the country, or have been recruited by local and international businesses, including Ernst and Young, the global accounting firm.
'Many of them also go into the rural agricultural programmes,' he added. 'There has been a great need to develop sustainable and organic agricultural practices in Cambodia. It is essentially an agrarian culture, and so the need for sound, long-term, sustainable agricultural expertise is very significant.'
Dr Fergusson also explained that in addition to the main campus, branch campuses of Maharishi Vedic University were established in two other cities, so distance education and other types of rural educational initiatives have been developed and implemented over the last 20 years.
'So many thousands of students have passed through the university over the years and gone on to fulfil important roles in society,' he said.
