Portugal: Schools implement Consciousness-Based Education

In Portugal two schools have implemented the Consciousness-Based Education curriculum. The first school, located in the southern Portugal town of Algarve, started the programme in 2010 with 52 students and 14 teachers learning Transcendental Meditation. The programme is growing steadily with currently more than 115 students practising Transcendental Meditation.

A second school, in the northern part of Portugal, decided to implement Consciousness-Based Education earlier this year. Reports indicate it is progressing well.

Consciousness-Based Education, a holistic approach to education, has been blossoming around the globe. Instead of being solely information-based, Consciousness-Based Education develops something more fundamental than the intellect; it develops the consciousness of the student.

The goal of Consciousness-Based schools is to awaken in every student the full potential of creativity, intelligence, and happiness for an increasingly problem-free, progressive and fulfilling life that brings all good to oneself, one's surroundings, and society.

The director of the Transcendental Meditation programme in Portugal reported a 28 per cent increase in people learning the technique—39 adults and 11 students in a school project.

During the summer a World Peace Assembly was held in Fatima. These assemblies feature extended group practice of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques, as well as knowledge meetings during which participants enjoy learning about different aspects of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Vedic Science in a series of historic video lectures. Participants report their experience during the assemblies, which last from a few days up to a week, to be deeply restful and refreshing. In addition, their group practice produces an influence of coherence and harmony in the national consciousness.
