Due to the great success of the Sustainable Living undergraduate degree programme at Maharishi University of Management (MUM), the university is preparing to launch new master's-level programmes in the field.

According to Dr David Fisher, the founder and director of the Sustainable Living Department, the university plans to offer both Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Science (MS) degrees in Sustainable Living.

Dr Fisher gave a brief history of the Sustainable Living Department, which he was so centrally involved in creating.

'The undergraduate degree programme began in the fall of 2003 with just six students,' he said. It has since become one of the most popular programmes at the university, and is certainly a great draw for students from across the country.

'The purpose of the undergraduate degree programme has been to help students gain the knowledge and skills and development of consciousness they need to design, build, and maintain sustainable communities,' Dr Fisher explained.

The degree programme 'has been a big success', he said, and now the department wants to offer an even deeper level of knowledge with two different master's programmes.

The focus of the master's degrees will be on sustainable community development.

While this is similar to the undergraduate programme, Dr Fisher said, 'we view the undergraduate programme as providing all the foundational knowledge. Then this master's programme . . . is to give students the ability to empower communities with enough consciousness, skills, and knowledge to be well on the way to becoming sustainably self-sufficient.'

Dr Fisher added, 'That is, this is kind of a training programme to apply the knowledge, to give teams of students the chance to actually go out and work with sustainable communities and create with them the opportunity to become increasingly self-sufficient.'
