One purpose of the visit to Mongolia by a delegation from Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in the USA, was to help Mongolian universities implement sustainable practices and technologies.
The delegation was invited by the largest university in Mongolia, Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST) with 40,000 students, to be key participants in a three-day seminar. One of the objectives of the seminar was to apply sustainable technologies and programmes at MUST.
The seminar brochure described this as: Introducing the new interdisciplinary study of sustainable living and understanding its implications for higher education and business.
To this end, Professor Lonnie Gamble from Maharishi University of Management presented at the seminar. Professor Gamble, founding faculty and curriculum director for the Sustainable Living department at MUM, addressed the issue of how Mongolia can rapidly develop economically in a way that protects the country's immense natural beauty and integrity.
He spoke on the need for sustainable human development in both inner and outer spheres, that is, on the level of consciousness and human development as well as material technologies.
In addition to talking about Transcendental Meditation as an effective technique to develop consciousness, Professor Gamble talked about rainwater collection and many other practical and applicable sustainable technologies.
While in Mongolia, Professor Gamble had the opportunity to visit other universities as well. He met with the director of an institute for sustainable development at another large university, who has plans for developing the programme and would like Professor Gamble to help contribute.
He also went out into the countryside to visit a model sustainable facility that Mongolian University of Science and Technology is developing.
