Two recent opinion pieces are representative of the high degree of support demonstrated among local parents for the proposed new Maharishi Free School in the Richmond Borough of London, UK. The pieces, one published online, the other in a local newspaper, expressed their writers' support for the school, which is in the process of gaining approval from the British government.
The Richmond school is one of two new Maharishi Free Schools proposed to open in England in 2013; the other is in Suffolk.
Maharishi School in West Lancashire, which has been successfully offering Consciousness-Based Education for the last 25 years, was among the first 24 Free Schools approved to open in the UK last September.
As of a few days ago, 493 families representing 767 students in the Richmond area had registered Maharishi Free School as their first choice school.
In the first opinion piece, in the Hampton People's Network, the parent mentioned having attended a Maharishi School informational meeting and done research on the Transcendental Meditation Programme, including speaking to several physician friends.
The writer concluded from this research, 'I can't help feeling that the proposed Maharishi School is a really exciting possibility for parents and children living in Hampton and the surrounding area. . . . The thought of a Consciousness-Based Education is a really exciting one.'
In addition, the writer spoke anecdotally of several doctors' opinions about Transcendental Meditation:
'We have friends who are doctors and practise TM on a daily basis, and speak really highly of it, suggesting that it allows them to remain calm and at ease during periods of stress. In fact, my mother is a psychotherapist and she also speaks very highly of the positive benefits of TM when regularly practised.'
In a letter to the Richmond & Twickenham Times, the local newspaper in the proposed location of the Maharishi School, another parent wrote:
'We'd like to express our firm interest in the proposal for the Maharishi Free School. We are the parents of three young children living in Hampton Hill, Richmond. We are becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of places and choices for our children regarding secondary school.'
The author went on to praise what he has seen of Maharishi Free School.
'Having been to the Maharishi presentation meeting, we strongly feel, as lifelong residents within the borough, that this proposed school should be given the go-ahead. We were very impressed by the content of the presentation and the education model suggested for the school.'
Lastly, the writer spoke of how he reached his opinion regarding the school:
'My wife was a teacher with ten years experience and was excited by this proposal. I currently work within healthcare and know of doctors and other healthcare professionals that advocate regularly practicing Transcendental Meditation. Therefore we have no hesitation in giving our full and unequivocal support to [the school].'
