2 July 2011
Renowned psychiatrist and bestselling author Dr Norman Rosenthal addressed graduating students at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, offering them 'seven pearls of wisdom', the first of which was 'know thyself'.
'In selecting those few words of advice that I would like to offer, I have borrowed from some of the great minds who have influenced me, and I've added a few thoughts and experiences of my own, said Norman E. Rosenthal, MD, speaking to an audience of over 1,000 at the M.U.M. graduation ceremonies on 2 July 2011.
'I am confident that Maharishi University of Management has been a great place for acquiring wisdom, and that the practice of Transcendental Meditation has itself made you all the more receptive to that wisdom. . . ,' he continued.
'Now I ask that you imagine that the ideas I am about to share are pearls on a string—a string of seven pearls—that I present to each of you today in recognition of your wonderful achievement, and as a gift to take with you on your journey. Here then are the seven pearls:
'Pearl number one: ''Know thyself''
'This ancient Greek aphorism has survived for thousands of years because of the wisdom it embodies—but what does it really mean? On one level, it says that there is a great value to knowing your own mind, because that can help you make good decisions on a day-to-day basis.
'At a deeper level, however, knowing yourself can help direct the most important decisions in your life—like choosing a spouse, or career, or deciding where you want to live.
'When I was 16 years old I wanted to be a psychiatrist and a researcher, but my parents disapproved . . . . I knew my own mind, so I stuck to my guns and it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.'
In the coming days, Global Good News will continue to feature Dr Rosenthal's discussion of 'know thyself'.
