The article features three mental health professionals, who report that students need to be freed from high stress levels as a prerequisite for learning. They also comment on the value of the Transcendental Meditation Technique as an effective means of reducing stress.
Norman Rosenthal, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical School and author of the new bestselling book Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation; cognitive learning specialist Sarina J. Grosswald, EdD; and clinical neuropsychologist William Stixrud, PhD, describe the high levels of stress children are subject to today, which affect their ability to focus and attend to schoolwork. As Dr Rosenthal puts it, 'The bottom line is, a stressed child cannot learn.'
The three experts also comment on the scientifically documented effects of the Transcendental Meditation Technique, which has been successfully used worldwide to help students 'de-stress'. Studies on schoolchildren and adolescents practising Transcendental Meditation have found reductions in psychological distress; lower stress and anxiety resulting in reduced symptoms of ADHD; decreased absenteeism, suspensions, and rule infractions in adolescents; greater academic achievement; and improved brain functioning.
Transcendental Meditation helps to 'settle down the nervous system to de-stress these children, so that their minds are now open and available to being educated and to learning', Dr Rosenthal says.
