Sustainability a key feature in plans for an innovative school

Sustainability is a key feature in architectural plans for an innovative school designed according to Maharishi Vastu to create an ideal learning environment.
'The knowledge for sustainable living and ecological awareness has become an important part of modern educational systems, therefore school buildings themselves should be a demonstration of these technologies so that students can become familiar with environmental issues in everyday life,' said an architectural student working on the initiative.
Planned features of the school include rainwater harvesting, a green roof, natural building materials, and geothermal as well as solar heating systems.
The school is comprised of areas designed for relaxation, exhibition, and lessons. A planetarium is situated within a spacious three-storey exhibition hall. On the western elevation, large atria are planned which will contain plants and seating, and will provide views to nature.
Skylights will bring sunlight—particularly auspicious eastern light—deep into the building.
Shading wings create a grand and welcoming entrance for students and teachers. The wings are designed to prevent excess solar heat in the summer while permitting the winter sun, which is lower in the sky, to provide additional heating.
A geothermal heat pump system has been introduced taking energy from the earth to heat the school, and thermal solar panels will also be incorporated to produce hot water.
Non-toxic building materials such as natural timber, stone, and biological insulation—all certified safe, environmentally friendly, and sustainable—will improve indoor air quality and create a healthy and comfortable indoor environment.
