The strong focus on sustainability at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, was recently recognized with the inclusion of the University in The Princeton Review's 2011 Guide to 311 Green Colleges.
According to the guide, there is a rising interest among students in attending colleges that practice, teach, and support environmentally responsible choices. The Green College guide was created to help students interested in sustainability find the best college for them.
Of the 2,000 colleges invited to fill out Princeton's survey, 311 were selected by virtue of earning the highest Green Rating and because ''the green initiatives of these institutions enhance students' academic experience and quality of life in ways that truly merit recognition.'' Those selected are considered exemplary in regard to ''addressing the balance of people, planet and prosperity in fascinating ways.''
In addition to being listed, MUM was highlighted in the introduction as a school that takes green attributes into account in designing and operating buildings, noting that the new Sustainable Living facility ''will even generate its own heating, cooling, and electricity needs.''
The listing for MUM noted all of the University's sustainability initiatives, including the vegetarian organic food service, the major in sustainable living, the organic farm and composting operation, the recycling program, the climate action plan, and the prairie restoration project.
