Maharishi University of Management's Sustainable Living Center: Fullest Maharishi Vastu and sustainability

The Sustainable Living Center at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA will be an example of both the fullest, purest expression of Maharishi Vastu and the height of energy efficiency and natural materials.

Jon Lipman, AIA, US Director of Maharishi Vedic Architecture, envisioned the building as 'the absolute quintessence of integration of all levels of Natural Law–designed architecture'.

Dr Lipman designed the Center with another architect who specializes in sustainable systems.

Even the construction of the building is now being completed off the grid using photovoltaic panels that are already in place, which is a historic development, Dr Lipman commented.

Every wall is built of earth blocks, created from earth across the street at the Argiro Student Centre. Students in the Sustainable Living programme spent a summer making the blocks.

Walls are plastered in natural materials, and the surface finish utilizes turmeric for colour and also milk components from a local organic dairy.

'This is going to be a building that is absolutely natural through and through,' Dr Lipman said.

'This building is already the most inspiring example of sustainability—of the absolutely perfect marriage, without any conflict, of the universal values of the architecture of nature with the sustainability [and] energy values which are so understood and prized in this generation,' Dr Lipman said.

Maharishi University of Management's Sustainable Living Center is one among many like-minded construction initiatives in the area, including Abundance EcoVillage and Cypress Villages.
