Next year, Maharishi University of Management (MUM), Fairfield, Iowa, USA, will be offering a new graduate programme, a Master's in Educational Innovation, which will train current and aspiring teachers in principles of Consciousness-Based Education as well as advanced learning technologies.
Dr Christopher Jones, Professor of Education and Dean of Teaching and Learning at MUM, explained that educational innovation consists of 'anything new—an idea, strategy, or development—which is brought forward to advance education and promote learning and growth among students.'
The master's programme will incorporate 'outer' and 'inner' innovations for teaching and learning. The former will include new digital technologies such as social media tools and video capture and storage; as well as strategies for classroom management and community building. The latter will include components of Consciousness-Based Education: The Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programmes, including Yogic Flying, and theoretical knowledge of the Unified Field and human physiology.
'This programme will present a systematic way for developing the inner life of the student, which, when combined with current technology and social science research, will help solve the long-time goals of modern education,' continued Dr Jones. He explained that when a teacher practises Transcendental Meditation, he or she brings to the classroom a reduced stress level, increased awareness and clarity of mind, and creativity in thought processes. When students practise TM, they are able to overcome limitations and challenges they face outside of school, thus giving them the ability to learn more effectively.
The master's programme will welcome current teachers wishing to develop their skills and knowledge, and will also offer a certification track for aspiring teachers. In addition to Dr Jones, faculty in the programme will include Dr Fred Travis, Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at MUM; and Dr Susan Dillbeck, President of the International Foundation of Consciousness-Based Education.
