Self-pulse reading as life-long tool for health: New online course at Maharishi University of Management

14 December 2010
Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in Fairfield, Iowa, USA is now offering an online course on self-pulse reading, the first of which began 14 December 2010.
Self-pulse reading is a central component of Maharishi Ayur-Veda health care. Simply by placing three fingertips on the wrist, the pulse reader is able to detect balance or imbalance within his own physiology and mind. 'Pulse reading allows one to experience the point at which consciousness is expressed as the physiology,' explained Dr Paul Morehead, Professor of Physiology and Health at MUM, as well as Dean of Maharishi College of Perfect Health. 'The level of reality experienced by the pulse reader is subtle, but it becomes more clear with practice.'
The self-pulse reading course, the first online distance education offering by MUM, is modeled after the original self-pulse reading course designed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi with Vaidyas (expert Ayurvedic physicians from India) and western doctors. The self-pulse course has been taught at the MUM campus for decades, and recently has been offered as a distance education course through Maharishi University of Vedic Medicine in Switzerland.
The course has 16 lessons, each consisting of a lecture and classroom discussion videotaped from an on-campus pulse course at MUM; as well as a set of slides which Maharishi designed to be prepared for the course. 'The slides are crystal clear, easy to follow and to learn from,' commented Dr Morehead. Altogether, the course contains 30 to 40 hours of videotaped lectures and discussion.
Those taking the course for credit will be required to complete it within three months, and will participate in live web conferences with professors every two weeks. They will also complete homework assignments, such as an ongoing journal describing their pulse-reading experiences; as well as a final exam. Those taking the course as noncredit will be allowed a maximum of nine months to complete it, will participate in monthly web conferences with professors, and will have optional homework and exams.
The self-pulse reading course is a requirement for graduation from either the MUM BA in Physiology and Heath or the pre-med track of the BA in Physiology and Heath. It can also apply as a science distribution elective for any other major.
'Self-pulse reading provides students with a valuable, life-long tool for assessing the level of balance within their physiology, guiding them in adjusting their lifestyle to achieve optimal health,' said Dr Morehead.
