What is missing in education is knowledge of the knower: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
by Global Good News staff writer

22 October 2010
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's historic address to the people of Nepal continues. The address, from 17 November 1974, was recently featured during the 22 October 2010 Full Moon celebration of the Global Mother Divine Organization, in honour of the anniversary of Maharishi's visit to the country.
Maharishi explained that the target of education is to create stability in the midst of activity and all the boundaries of life. What has been missing so far is knowledge of the knower, the Self. Established in the non-changing field of life, one gains evenness of life.
Life is always in the relative field, the field of activity, Maharishi said. 'The whole target of education is to bring stability in life in the midst of all relative upheavals of activity, the ever-changing field of life.'
He explained that what should be predominant in life is the non-changing field—'the immortal, eternal Self, or Being, should be dominating in whatever we do. Whatever we do, that doing, that boundary, is not able to overthrow our boundless status of the Self. Atma, the Self, should not be overshadowed. Atma should remain fully alive in our awareness when we are exposed to boundaries.'
Life will always be lived in boundaries, Maharishi said, but education makes one live unboundedness in the midst of boundaries. 'This is the goal of education. This is the purpose of education. . . What has been missing so far is knowledge of the knower.
'The knower in its maximum dignity, maximum glory, is that field of life, which is immortal, eternal, infinite, the home of all the Laws of Nature, the home of all knowledge—knowing which or experiencing which,' Maharishi continued, 'one gets established in evenness, in that unboundedness.'
If we are not able to inculcate that unbounded in our daily life, then we are not educated. Educated means we are not ignorant. 'An uneducated man will not be able to do this and this,' Maharishi said. 'He will not be able to build bridges; he'll not be able to add one and one to be two; and he'll not be able to do this and this. An educated man knows how to do, how to do, how to do.'
All the various subjects that we are teaching are necessary because every success brings some facility in life, Maharishi said. 'Everything that we study and we teach, every aspect of teaching available in the world is necessary because it creates some facility in that field.
'Life as a whole demands knowledge of everything. We should not be ignorant about anything and then only we will not make mistakes in any field.'
In the coming days, Global Good News will feature the conclusion of Maharishi's address, in which he explains of how knowledge of everything is possible, even though it is possible to study only a limited number of subjects.
* 'Mother Divine' refers to the nourishing, evolutionary power of Natural Law lively within all of creation and within the silent consciousness of everyone. The Global Mother Divine Organization, established in December 2007, is the ladies' wing of the Global Country of World Peace in 192 countries.
