Sophia Blitz, a student at Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa, in the United States, was recognized by Iowa Governor Chet Culver for outstanding academic achievement at the eighth annual Governor's Scholar Recognition Ceremony April 25 in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

The statewide program, sponsored by the Iowa Governor's Office, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF), honored more than 400 high school seniors from throughout Iowa. Each high school was invited to select the senior student or students possessing the highest academic ranking based on grade point average for their first seven semesters.

Maharishi School students have won countless awards and competitions in many fields of academic study, as well as in athletics and the arts, a reflection, school leaders say, of its Consciousness-Based Education programme, which includes daily practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
