Sustainable Living Center is unique in United States
The Hawk Eye Translate This Article
26 April 2010
On 26 April 2010 The Hawk Eye reported:
A new Sustainable Living Center is under construction at Maharishi University of Management (MUM). The building will be LEED certified at the platinum level, completely off-the-grid in terms of water and energy usage, and constructed according to principles of Maharishi Vedic Architecture.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of education.
The Sustainable Living Center is being built on the MUM campus in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. Center co-designer Mike Nicklas—who is also president of Innovative Design, a company that has designed more than 700 'green' buildings—told The Hawk Eye that the Sustainable Living Center is unique. 'There's no other building like this going up in the nation, or in the world for that matter, that we know of,' he says in the article.
'The building itself is an educational tool, not just a passive one like most classroom buildings,' explains David Fisher, head of MUM's Sustainable Living Department, in the article. 'It will provide participatory education where students will be continually adding to or altering the building and grounds, as well as systematically checking its effectiveness.'
Sustainable features include: electricity and temperature regulation from solar, wind, and geothermal energy sources; water from a rainwater catchment; light from outdoors throughout the whole building; and 'non-toxic materials from local sources', the article reports.
'Sustainability is a major focus at MUM, which has long promoted techniques for living in harmony with nature,' the article states. The Transcendental Meditation Programme has been central to the university since it was established by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi more than 35 years ago.
