Consciousness-Based Education leaders in the United States recently made a presentation to a major organization focussed on education.

Dr George Rutherford, an expert with long experience in implementing Consciousness-Based Education programmes in Washington, DC schools, and Dr Robert Roth, Vice-President of the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, made the presentation.

Dr Rutherford spoke of his life-long search for a solution to the problems plaguing education in the US, including high dropout rates among students. He said that in his 46 years as an educator, the Transcendental Meditation Programme has been the only thing that has ever worked to improve student performance, learning environment, and other key factors in education. 'Dr Rutherford said that with TM implemented in schools, there is no need for any other programme,' added Dr Roth, speaking on Maharishi Global Family Chat.*

The organization that Dr Rutherford and Dr Roth presented to is a nonprofit involved in over 3,000 schools, comprising 1.5 million students, and their main purpose is to research and implement programmes for the reduction of school dropouts. The three key elements the organization emphasizes in their mission are: first, to give students the tools to have a healthy start to each day in the classroom, which they can also apply throughout their lives; second, to create a learning environment in schools that is receptive to knowledge, rather than a negative environment that produces fear in students; and third, to let students experience a relationship with mature adults who can provide them with effective guidance in their studies and in life.

'Transcendental Meditation fulfils the first two of the goals put forward by this organization,' commented Dr Roth, 'and teachers working in Consciousness-Based Education classrooms certainly can fulfil the third—providing role models who are healthy, dynamic, and creative, with the transcendental value in their lives.'

Dr Roth concluded by saying that the presentation was very warmly received, with interest in the organization in helping implement Transcendental Meditation in schools. They look forward to the possibility of several schools beginning to implement the Transcendental Meditation Programme, with the potential for more to follow.

* Dr Roth's report was featured on the 20 April 2010 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
