Dr Andreas Kopnick, a professor at the Art Academy of Munster in Germany and Teacher of the Transcendental Meditation Programme, has recently published a paper on the benefits of Transcendental Meditation for enhancing creativity in the artist. Dr Kopnick has also founded a TM Club at the university.

During a sabbatical in the later part of 2008, Dr Kopnick wrote his paper, titled 'Offline', which describes the role of the development of inner consciousness in the field of artistic performance. 'In the conventional understanding of the art schools, creativity is a static thing. But from our perspective we know that creativity is not static—that it can develop, and develop effectively, through practice of Transcendental Meditation,' explained Dr Kopnick.* In his paper, he aimed to inform readers on this point, taking the large body of research already done on Transcendental Meditation and connecting it to specific qualities significant for artists.

He distributed his work among colleagues within the Art Academy of Munster, as well as to other art academies throughout Germany. Dr Kopnick didn't necessarily expect the academies to implement Transcendental Meditation immediately in the curriculum. 'I knew that I needed to take a second approach—to introduce the programme to students as well.'

For this reason, Dr Kopnick started a Transcendental Meditation club, where he provided information about the technique to students, including scientific research. 'I was amazed at how quickly students grasped the importance of TM, even before I discussed any intellectual aspects of it—they embraced it on an intuitive level,' he commented.

So far, 15 students have expressed interest in learning the technique, and he expects more to follow. 'This is a good first step,' he said, 'and I hope it will eventually lead to a standardized implementation of Transcendetal Meditation within the school.'

* Dr Kopnick's report was featured on the 9 January 2010 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
