IamU projects helping eliminate poverty through educating South Africa youth

28 June 2009
One of many impressive presentations at the Third IamU Conference in early June in MERU, Holland, was given by conference call from South Africa.
Annie Falk, who grew up in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, and is now a Teacher of Transcendental Meditation, spoke about projects to eliminate poverty by educating and promoting leadership in the youth of South Africa through programmes incorporating Consciousness-Based Education. She commented that she is so inspired by what young people are doing around the world through IamU.
Annie graduated from Maharishi University of Management (M.U.M.) in 2005, and is now working with Maharishi Invincibility School of Management in South Africa as part of her MBA programme at M.U.M., through distance education. Previously she spent one year in Beijing working with Dr Yunxiang Zhu*, helping to create Consciousness-Based Education programmes in China.
Speaking of her current work, she said, 'Everyone is moving in one direction with the common goal to educate Africa's youth. It's a huge need in South Africa,' she said, 'because about 40% of South Africans are unemployed. The majority of these are aged between 18-34. Only 1 in every 100 students graduates from school.'
In 1995 Taddy Blecher and other teachers went into the townships and taught Transcendental Meditation to about 4,000 students; the grades of this group of students went up about 25%. There was a control group of about 12,000 whose grades went down about 1%. 'So as we all know, TM is a huge force in the world for developing people's minds and their ability to learn.'
Global Good News will feature a second article about the student projects in South Africa in the coming days.
* Dr Zhu is Associate Dean of Asian Expansion at Maharishi University of Management.
