Maharishi University of Management soccer team wins gold
by Patricia Boland
The M.U.M. Review Maharishi University of Management, Iowa, USA Translate This Article

Members of Maharishi University of Management's (M.U.M.) soccer team, M.U.M. United, won gold medals last month after being undefeated during the season. They placed first in their league after tough competition from teams of players from Korea and Italy.
'It was tough at some points because there were two other strong teams this time,' said Turkish team manager Niyazi Parim, an MA in Maharishi Vedic Science student intern.
The University fielded two teams in the eight-week season during September and October: M.U.M. United and the M.U.M. Flyers. The Flyers placed fourth behind the two other strong teams in the community tournament of the Iowa City Kickers Soccer Club Adult League.
The team's goalkeeper, Colombian Gilberto Rodriguez-Campbell, a Computer Professionals Program student, believed the team worked hard to win. 'My position allows me to see the whole picture and visualize how to push forward. I'm glad I was on the M.U.M. team.'
However some team members were always confident of winning. 'From the very beginning of the championship, I was sure we were going to win because we were by far the best team in the league,' said Ethiopian Anteneh Maru, also a Computer Professionals Program student.
Team members come from Bhutan, Cameroon, Colombia, Ethiopia, Palestine, Egypt, Eritrea, Nepal, the Netherlands, Turkey, and the U.S.
The team has been coached by Brazilian Luiz Ventura, who has experience coaching high school soccer in his home country.
'We at Maharishi University of Management are using the growth of consciousness as the foundation of our work,' Mr. Ventura said. 'United and Flyers teams have proven they have self-organizing properties developed through the Transcendental Meditation program.'
