'Quiet Time in the Classroom' was the compelling title of the third annual National Summit on Student Health and Education in New York City on 16 October. The Summit, attended by more than 375 leaders in education, health, and business, was sponsored by the US Committee for Stress-Free Schools. Guests included superintendents, principals, and guidance counsellors from 160 schools in the greater New York City area, as well as philanthropists and heads of foundations.

The Summit highlighted the success of the Quiet Time/Transcendental Meditation Program in alleviating widespread problems in education, including poor academic achievement, anxiety, depression, school violence, and teacher burnout, in schools around the United States and the world.

Dr Robert Roth, National Director of Expansion for the Global Country of World Peace in America, was one of the chief organizers. Speaking on the Maharishi Global Family Chat, he described the event as 'truly extraordinary in the history of modern education. The programme was great, the response was outstanding.' Dr Roth congratulated many local Teachers of Transcendental Meditation in the New York City area, whose work contributed to the success of the Summit.

'When invitations went out', Dr Roth said, 'the event proved so popular that more than 150 people had to be turned away. Fortunately we were able to provide video coverage so that those who were not in the hall were able to view the proceedings. . . .

'Guests were provided with a response card on which they could indicate if they wanted more information and what their main area of interest was. The selection included academic performance; reduction of stress; did they want Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme in their school; did they personally want to learn Transcendental Meditation, etc. Every box was ticked!'

Following the Summit, eighty schools expressed their intentions to adopt Consciousness-Based Education programmes.

Dr Roth announced that follow-up meetings will be held in the greater New York City area and that the entire Summit would be re-webcast to ensure highest technical quality for viewers. Extensive publicity is planned in the coming months to inform all educators about the success of the Summit. He also provided the website where the Summit is currently available: webcast.stressfreesummit.org, as well as the web address of a new site featuring doctors and educators: www.tmeducation.org.

In Part II of this article, Dr Roth discusses presentations given at the Summit and announces plans for future expansion.

Global Good News will also feature reports on this event in the Excellence in Action web page.
