The National Summit will showcase a highly effective programme for reducing classroom stress and teacher burnout and improving academic achievement—the Transcendental Meditation/Quiet-Time Program in education.

The alarming rise of classroom stress fuels widespread problems in education, including poor academic achievement, anxiety, depression, school violence, and teacher burnout.

To help neutralize this stress, many schools are establishing a 'Quiet Time' period at the start and end of each school day: two 10- to 15-minute sessions when students sit quietly to rest and/or read silently.

Increasingly, schools are offering their students and teachers the opportunity to learn and practice during these Quiet-Time periods the Transcendental Meditation program of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a simple, scientifically proven, nonreligious technique for reducing stress, improving health, and developing an individual's full creative potential.

Extensive published research in education has shown that this program strengthens physiological and cognitive foundations of learning, while promoting healthy lifestyle choices and positive behavior.

Who should participate?
This National Summit will provide educators, government leaders, health professionals, parents, philanthropists, and foundations with an introduction to the Transcendental Meditation/Quiet-Time Program in education—including the more than 35 years of scientific research and classroom experience that document its practical and wide-ranging benefits for both students and teachers.

Speakers include:
David Lynch, an award-winning film and television director (Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire), photographer, painter, and sculptor. He is also the founder and chair of the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, which has provided millions of dollars for 50,000 students in public and private schools throughout the United States and worldwide to learn the Quiet Time/Transcendental Meditation program.

Russell Simmons, chair and CEO of Rush Communications. He was recently named one of the 'Top 25 Most Influential People of the Past 25 Years' by USA Today for his groundbreaking entrepreneurial vision. From creating Def Jam Recordings in 1984 to the 2007 publication of his New York Times bestseller Do You!, his influence in music, fashion, finance, television, film, and philanthropy is recognized globally. A devoted practitioner of yoga and meditation, Russell also leads the non-profit division of his empire, Rush Community Affairs, which is dedicated to empowering at-risk youth.

John Hagelin, Ph.D., a renowned quantum physicist, author, and educator who has led an international scientific investigation into the foundations of human consciousness during the past 25 years. Dr. Hagelin also serves as the president of the David Lynch Foundation and the chair of the Center for Leadership Performance, which implements TM-based wellness and corporate development programs in business, government, and other organizations.

'The Transcendental Meditation/Quiet-Time Program is the most powerful, effective program that I have come across in my 37 years as a public school administrator for addressing the problem of stress in education, particularly in our inner-city schools. It's working. It is nourishing these children and providing them an immensely valuable tool for life. It is saving lives.'
