Record 220 new students arrive for spring semester
The M.U.M. Review Maharishi University of Management, Iowa, USA Translate This Article
12 March 2008
Enrollment at the University continues to surge, with 220 new students arriving for spring semester—a new record for spring enrollment—and causing both a shortage of classroom and housing space on campus.
As of February 21, there were 1,126 students enrolled in Maharishi University of Management programs, including those finishing their degrees via distance education and students enrolled in China.
Leading the influx were 107 students in the Computer Professionals Program and 63 students in the Accounting Professionals M.B.A. program. Also arriving were 32 new undergraduate students, with 12 of those transferring from other universities.
'This is a very large enrollment of new students for spring semester,' said Tom Rowe, University Registrar. 'We have a shortage of classrooms and housing and need to build new residence halls.'
The opening of the Argiro Student Center has helped somewhat. Dalby Hall, a 300-seat auditorium, is being used as a classroom this block to accommodate 88 M.B.A. students taking a course in business law.
In addition, the move of dining facilities, the bookstore, the café, and other activities to the Argiro Student Center has freed up space in the Student Union that will now be used for classrooms by the art department, the Computer Professionals Program, and other academic departments as needed.
Also, a classroom in the unfinished garden level of the Argiro Student Center is expected to be ready in early spring and will be used by the Accounting Professionals Program, which has outgrown its classroom space in Verrill Hall.
A housing crunch has necessitated use of Building 111, which had been remodeled in 2006 to accommodate the arrival of the Vedic Pandits. Some students in that building and in Building 106 are living two to a room.
Mr. Rowe said that University enrollment is showing a marked upward trend and compared the current enrollment of 1,126 to the 896 students enrolled at this time last year and 755 in 2006. In addition, the 220 new students are approximately double the number that arrived in January and February of last year.
