School year to start on a meditative note
by Bridie Smith
The Age Translate This Article
2 February 2008
On 2 February 2008 The Age reported:
Twice daily, at the beginning and end of each school day, students at the Maharishi School in Reservoir, Melbourne, Australia practise Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Technique for 10 minutes, which allows them to tap into a vast ocean of creativity and intelligence.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of education.
Open for 11 years, Reservoir's Maharishi School—the only school of its kind in Australia—is an independent primary school that offers Consciousness-Based Education, with Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Technique as an integral part of the student's education.
The Age quoted Principal Frances Clarke as saying, 'It creates great receptivity to learning; their awareness is open. It creates dynamic, alert and aware children. They meditate and are so settled and silent and then they get up, go outside and play soccer, and it's that contrast of rest and activity that strengthens the physiology.'
The Age reported, 'Other benefits Ms Clarke attributed to meditation included reducing stress levels, headaches, and insomnia in children. She said levels of bullying at the school—which charges just over $4000 a year and teaches the standard Victorian curriculum—were also nearly non-existent.'
Parents also noticed that Transcendental Meditation has positively influenced their children by increasing their confidence, helping them deal with stress, and interact better with other children.
Echoing the sentiment expressed by a parent who didn't want her son to have to leave the school, the special education teacher added her wish for a high school that offered Transcendental Meditation.
