Joachim Claes, who hosted Dr Ashley Deans' unscheduled, last-minute visit last week, enumerated success after success with positive press coverage, the support of a traditional Cossack chief, a scientist, and a member of parliament, and a plan to repeat the performance on an even larger scale in October.

Mr Claes first reported on a big press conference with Dr Deans in Kiev. 'We were blessed with a very special guest, Headman Mulava, a traditional Cossack chief of Ukraine. He's a meditator himself, his whole family are meditators and practitioners of the TM-Sidhi Programme, and he has such strong support for the movement! So his presence there at that conference gave our whole programme much more credibility.'

'Another very enjoyable surprise,' Mr Claes continued, 'was a phone call' from the colonel of the Ukraine police forces that evening before the conference. 'He has already made a recommendation in 2002 to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, that Transcendental Meditation should be incorporated in all police forces.' At that time he felt that it should not go public. Now there is a new wave of interest. The Prime Minister of Ukraine has asked for scientifically-proven solutions to improve the situation. 'As a result there is now a four-page document on his table, signed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, recommending Transcendental Meditation for personal development and the TM-Sidhi Programme for social development. And the news was that we could make it public. So we were able to give copies of the recommendation to all the journalists there.'

The press conference, attended by 16 journalists including two national television stations, went very well. Both TV stations ran very positive clips on the evening news, showing Dr Deans describing Maharishi's Consciousness-Based Education and the reporter himself describing how normal education leads to fragmented brain development, how incorporating Transcendental Meditation in education leads to holistic brain development, and how this was confirmed by research in Moscow. Also many newspapers carried articles, resulting in many phone calls to the press agency from schools asking when and where they could implement these programmes.

Dr Deans and Mr Claes also had very positive meetings with influential politicians, one a Member of Parliament who is a meditator himself, and another who is the head of the Parliamentary Commission on Education, who advises educators what to do. The head of the Parlimentary Commission told them, 'Go ahead. You have my full support. We will implement this programme.' Mr Claes commented, 'The politicians really want to help us.'

In several meetings with a professor at the University of Kiev, Mr Claes reported, 'Their conclusion was that the quickest way to incorporate Transcendental Meditation in all the universities is to set up a scientific experiment in which we teach Transcendental Meditation to one or two schools and then monitor the progress.' So the plan is to teach enough students for national invincibility for the nation, for which they would need about 700 students.

In the South of Ukraine, they met with Region Administrators, local and regional politicians, which brought 'very positive results from Dr. Deans' brilliant and inspirational presentations.' In one region, they want to start TM very quickly.

The last meeting on the last day was organized by the traditional Cossack chief of Ukraine for one of his friends, the head of the organization for all the directors of all private schools in the country. She had really wanted to meet with Dr Deans, Mr Claes explained, and 'She had invited all her teachers with absolutely positive results. This lady is very, very bright; and wants to incorporate Transcendental Meditation in her own school to inspire others to do the same.'

The next step, Mr Claes concluded, is that Dr Deans will come back in October. 'We'll organize a very big conference with hundreds, if not thousands, of school heads to implement this' in many schools and create invincibility not only for Ukraine, but for all the surrounding countries also.
