Grant supports retrospective exhibit of work by Greg Thatcher
The M.U.M. Review Translate This Article
8 April 2006
The University recently received a $1,000 Mini-Grant from the Iowa Arts Council to support an exhibit of art work by Greg Thatcher in Unity Gallery, as well as helping to support the production of a museum-quality catalog to accompany and promote the exhibit.
The show will be a 30-year retrospective of art by Mr. Thatcher, who has been on Maharishi University of Management faculty and then on Maharishi School faculty since 1978.
Mr. Thatcher has used many differing media for his work, which includes drawings, paintings, prints, mixed media, and hand-made paper. Subjects include landscapes, underwater imagery, a yew tree series, and a palm tree series.
Mr. Thatcher said that this is the first time a Maharishi University of Management exhibit has included a museum-quality, glossy, color catalog, and he is grateful that the grant is helping to support its production. The catalog will be part of a media kit that will be sent around the state to promote the exhibit.
The Iowa Arts Council Mini-Grants require a matching contribution, which was provided by the time invested by Gallery Director Patricia Innis and designer Shepley Hansen, who is creating the catalog.
'Greg Thatcher's retrospective exhibit and the accompanying catalog will offer a unique view of the creative process and 30-year development of this gifted artist's work,' Ms. Innis said.
Mr. Thatcher received his B.F.A. from the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, and an M.A. in painting and drawing from the University of Saskatchewan.
The works in the forthcoming show have been exhibited in the U.S., Canada, England, and France.
The exhibit will run May 1-27. There will be an opening reception on Monday, May 1, 7:15-9:00 p.m. There will also be a gallery walk on Saturday, May 13, at 1:00 p.m. A closing celebration with musical performance will be held Saturday, May 27, at 1:00 p.m.
Unity Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 9:45 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and 7:15-9:00 p.m., Saturday, 9:45 a.m.-4:00 p.m., and Sunday, 7:15 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
