One of the reasons the third annual Change Begins Within Benefit Gala in Los Angeles was such a success was the lineup of fascinating and popular celebrities who agreed to lend their support to the event.
Ellen DeGeneres, a comedian known for her 'heart of gold' who also has the top-rated talk show in the United States, opened the evening.
Next Russell Brand, another well-known comedian and actor, came onstage to speak about his experiences with the Transcendental Meditation Programme.
Filmmaker David Lynch, whose David Lynch Foundation was hosting the gala, gave a 'sterling, stunningly beautiful introduction to Transcendental Meditation', said Bob Roth, Foundation vice president and one of the organizers of the event.
Next Dr Norman Rosenthal, world-renowned scientist and author of the New York Times bestseller Transcendence, spoke. He reviewed the scientific research on Transcendental Meditation and its applications in all areas of society, 'speaking specifically in many cases to the leaders of society in the hall', said Mr Roth.
These talks and presentation were the first phase of the evening.
The second phase went deeply into the application of Transcendental Meditation in education (the Quiet Time Programme) and the Resilient Warrior Programme, offering the technique to military personnel, veterans, and their families.
The event also honoured several leaders for their work, including Paul Rieckhoff, who is an Iraq veteran and Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, a new and influential organization representing 200,000 veterans.
Russell Simmons was also honoured. Mr Simmons is 'a great philanthropist and entrepreneur,' Mr Roth remarked, 'and an amazingly outspoken and effective advocate for Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme.'
