Yoga studios begin to incorporate Transcendental Meditation

'Transcending* is considered by many to be the missing link in the whole field of yoga,' said Dr Sam Katz, teacher of the Transcendental Meditation Programme. He was speaking in reference to a growing trend of yoga studios across the United States incorporating Transcendental Meditation into their practices.
Dr Katz went on to explain that because 'transcending is the very basis of what yoga is all about,'** many yoga teachers are becoming more and more interested in meditation and transcending.
He quoted one yoga instructor as saying, 'The truth is we haven't really been trained in this. We've been trained in the Hatha Yoga positions and some of the philosophy and some Pranayama techniques, and wonderful knowledge that has been very helpful to people, but when it comes to meditation, our teachers were not well prepared in how to teach us.'
Hatha Yoga and the practice of yoga come from the great ancient Vedic tradition of knowledge. Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation also comes directly from the same Vedic tradition. In addition, Dr Katz commented, because Transcendental Meditation is the most widely prescribed and thoroughly researched meditation programme in the world, it is quite natural that many yoga teachers are turning to Transcendental Meditation.
Yoga teachers in general are very eager to help their students grow and develop, and so they are looking for an effective form of meditation they can offer their students.
Many find that Transcendental Meditation helps them and their students understand the full value of yoga. So instead of just focusing on the poses of the body, they can also focus on inner intelligence and growth of consciousness.
* Transcending: the process of the mind settling down during Transcendental Meditation to experience the silent, unbounded field of pure intelligence or pure consciousness at the basis of all its activity.
** Dr Katz was referring to the understanding of Yoga, an aspect of the Vedic literature, brought to light by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in his Vedic Science. See related articles: ∙ Maharishi on the complete meaning of Yoga. ∙ The yoga sutra and deep meditation.
