6 January 2008
Continuing our series of articles about Maharishi Gandharva, we present more questions and answers about this unique, life-supporting music.
Please see also the previous articles on Maharishi Gandharva Veda: Maharishi Gandharva Veda and Questions and answers, Part I
Do different Maharishi Gandharva Veda melodies create different effects? Yes. The overall effect of all Ragas (melodies) is balancing, but at the finest feeling level, the frequencies of each Raga bring out specific qualities or attributes of nature, called Rasas. For example, the sounds of the sunrise Raga Bhairavi enliven the values of gentleness and emotional strength.
The midday Raga Bhrindabani Saranga is associated with knowledge and wisdom. Raga Bhimpalashi, sung in the afternoon, brings support of Natural Law, greater success in life and fulfillment of desire, whereas the evening melody Kedara is for the upliftment of the heart. Its nourishing frequencies enliven the qualities of peace and tenderness.
I am unfamiliar with this music. Doesn't that reduce its effectiveness? No. Scientific studies have observed that the beneficial influences of Maharishi Gandharva Veda are irrespective of an individual's personal musical background, taste or subjective experience.
What is the best way to gain maximum benefits from Maharishi Gandharva Veda? Learning to play the music yourself and attending live concerts by master musicians is most powerful, as the harmonizing and integrating influence of the rhythms and melodies is most profound. For maximum benefit when playing Maharishi Gandharva Veda at home, listen to each musical selection during the appropriate time of day or season.
It is best to listen while sitting or lying down comfortably with your eyes closed, simply allowing the attunement with the eternal rhythms and frequencies of Nature to take place.
Is it true that this music has a beneficial effect even if no one is there to listen? Yes. Every building, every room, every environment is ultimately made of sound vibrations that will resonate with other sound vibrations. Even if no one is present to listen, the balancing sounds of Maharishi Gandharva Veda create a positive influence in the atmosphere. By playing Maharishi Gandharva Veda music in your home or office when no one is there, you can neutralize stress and produce an effect of harmony and coherence in the room.
