There are a number of reasons that students in the Computer Science department at Maharishi University of Management go on to find success as working professionals, said department chair Dr Keith Levi.
He said that students are regularly hired by top companies in the United States, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, and their recognition as technically competent workers is growing.
Dr Levi gave a brief history of the Computer Science department, saying that it was started in 1979, but really hit its stride in 1996.
'A big event for us was in 1996 when we brought into the Master of Science (MSCS) degree programme what we call our co-op programme, where students work part time in industries . . . and by doing that they pay for their education,' Dr Levi said. 'That programme has been very successful.'
Dr Levi went on to explain a few of the reasons for MSCS graduates' success in their professional lives.
'One, we are quite selective who we admit,' he said. 'Two, all the students practise the Transcendental Meditation programme and they gain the ''x factor'' that we're all familiar with: being balanced, calm, alert, and having the ability to work well with others.'
The ability to work with others is very important in modern software positions, Dr Levi said. 'There are very few places in big companies and even small projects where people work just individually anymore.'
Another aspect of the programme that prepares students for success is 'a very strong and up-to-date curriculum, and this is something that's defined by our very capable and experienced faculty,' Dr Levi said.
He explained that the department has ten full-time faculty with PhDs and substantial industry experience.
'We also have a strong complement of visiting and adjunct faculty members who come from other universities and industry,' Dr Levi concluded.
