Renewable revolution

Electric vehicles of all kinds are moving into the mainstream—from buses to motorcycles—and being tested in competitions around the world. More electric cars are being designed and developed by both university students and car manufacturers. And they are being promoted by businesses.

More uses of solar energy are being developed—from sterilizing medical equipment to powering planes. The American assembly plant for the electric car Volt is using solar energy to power the vehicles before they send them to dealers.

In May, major companies put their money behind wind energy and 'green' projects. Internet search giant Google has been investing in wind energy as it seeks reliable new ways to power its massive data centres.

The Netherlands' use of sustainable energy in its hothouses is an example to the world. Russia plans bike trails and windmills in its developing technology centre. London's 2012 Olympic plans are fuelling greener buildings in Britain. Russia and Brazil are seeking the Olympic Development Authority's advice on sustainability for their major sporting events—the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
