10 June 2009
On 5 June, it was announced that The Tower Companies' 276,000 square foot [25,640 sq metre] corporate office building in Rockville, Maryland, USA, has been awarded LEED Platinum Certification.
The Tower Companies have built six LEED Certified office and residential buildings in the Washington, DC area—making it the largest green builder in the nation's capital—and were the first to build certified green apartments in the United States. The Tower Companies are recognized as an international authority in the industry, and are the only real estate developer in the USA on the Environmental Protection Agency's National Top 50 Green Power purchasers list, as well as being EPA Certified Carbon Neutral.
The corporate office, called the Tower Building, had previously won the 2003 Green Office Building of the Year by the Apartment and Office Building Association, and a LEED Silver certification under the LEED for Existing Buildings rating system.
Dr Jeffrey Abramson, a senior partner at The Tower Companies, stated there are 64 billion square feet of real estate in the USA, which consume more energy than any other sector including cars. He makes a strong case for the US government to offer tax incentives to builders and homeowners to accelerate the process of making buildings green.
In addition to their commitment to green and sustainable building practices, the Tower Companies are a pioneer in the use of Vedic Architecture, also called Vastu—the science of connecting the individual with Nature's intelligence through 'fortune-creating buildings'.
Dr Abramson was invited to speak at the renowned Aspen Institute in March. Global Good News will feature his presentation on 'Vedic architecture and cities of the future' in the coming days.
