Tuvalu teams up with Taiwanese artist for Venice exhibition 12 June 2013 - For the first time, the Pacific island of Tuvalu has an exhibition at the world's biggest international contemporary art festival in Italy. In danger of becoming the first nation in the world to be swallowed up by the sea, Tuvalu has teamed up with a Taiwanese eco-artist to raise awareness about climate change at the Venice Biennale. Taiwanese artist Vincent Huang's work in Venice conveys the idea that the fate of developing countries is closely linked with that of developed ones. (more)
Tuvalu seeks clean power 15 August 2009 - The Pacific island state of Tuvalu has set a goal of a 100 per cent shift to renewable energy by 2020, hoping to set an example to industrialized nations to cut greenhouse gases it blames for rising sea levels. Tuvalu, a string of coral atolls whose highest point is 4.5 metres (15 ft) above sea level, estimates it would cost just over $20 million to generate all electricity for its 12,000 people from solar and wind power and end dependence on diesel. Tuvalu water crisis may point to global problems 14 October 2011 - A few years ago, Tuvalu islanders used to survive droughts with all-night vigils at wells to collect precious fresh water during the moments it seeped into the shafts. As the ocean tide rose, it would push fresh water up into a well, and people would take turns scooping it out, cup by cup. This year's drought on this isolated atoll in the South Pacific Ocean is equally severe, but with a difference: People no longer turn to well water when the rains don't come. It's too contaminated and salty to drink. Experts say the contamination is due in part to development and population growth. But part of it, too, can be attributed to greater recent tidal fluctuations, resulting in unusually high tides that have mixed salt water in with ground water. With climate change expected to push sea levels higher in the decades ahead, Tuvalu could become a bellwether for low-lying islands, where rising oceans threaten to contaminate ground water to the point where it becomes unable to sustain life. Tiny Tuvalu imposes emergency after public protest 13 January 2011 - Emergency rule has been imposed in the tiny South Pacific nation of Tuvalu after protesters marched through the capital demanding the resignation of the country's finance minister. The one naval patrol boat owned by the island nation of about 12,000 is guarding the coastline near the homes of Governor General Iakopa Itaeli Taeia and Prime Minister Willy Telavi, on the main island and capital, Funafuti. Communications Minister Kausea Natano says the emergency was declared Thursday to prevent moves to destabilize the government. (more)
Pacific: Tuna's vast last refuge threatened 27 July 2004 - On scores of islands across the Pacific a vast setting is developing for what may become one of the great battles between consumption and conservation in the 21st century, as a growing appetite for fish meets oceans fast being emptied of them.
