Tiny Turks and Caicos receives first credit rating 2 July 2014 - The Turks and Caicos Islands received its first sovereign credit rating Tuesday in what officials portrayed as a milestone for a British territory that only recently emerged from direct rule imposed amid a corruption scandal. 'It's a huge step,' Finance Minister Washington Misick said from Providenciales, the most populated island in the chain. 'It gives us an opportunity to compare ourselves with the rest of the Caribbean and the rest of the world and offers us an opportunity to improve on our economic development.' (more)
Turks and Caicos to take government reins from Britain 9 November 2012 - The Turks and Caicos Islands prepared to govern itself for the first time in three years as voters in the British territory elected a new government Friday. The vote marked the end of Britain's three-year direct rule over the territory following an inquiry into rampant corruption that led to the 2009 resignation of former jet-setting Premier Michael Misick. 'It is good to know that we are returning to controlling our own affairs,' said 21-year-old hotel waiter Rico Forbes. 'Today would be the day. I am really thankful.' (more)

Turks and Caicos premier resigns amid scandal 24 March 2009 - The jet-setting premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands resigned Monday, a week earlier than expected, following an investigation that found 'clear signs' of corruption in the eight-island British dependency. Michael Misick, who had previously promised to resign on March 31, said he was stepping down early to give his successor more time to set up a new government - even as Britain plans to dissolve the territory's Cabinet and legislature following the wide-ranging UK corruption inquiry. Earlier this month, the London-appointed governor, Gordon Wetherell, said the British investigators found 'clear signs of political amorality and immaturity' in Turks and Caicos. He said an order has been drafted to suspend parts of the British territory's constitution and transfer the authority of government ministers to him. (more)
Embattled Turks and Caicos leader to resign 13 February 2009 - Jet-setting Prime Minister Michael Misick said Friday he will step down as leader of the Turks and Caicos Islands at the end of March, citing a lack of support for his scandal-plagued government. The surprise announcement came hours after the Deputy Prime Minister resigned over differences with Misick, whose big-spending, Hollywood lifestyle helped turn the Turks and Caicos into a celebrity hotspot. But it also fueled a corruption probe in the British territory, a Caribbean island chain 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) southeast of Miami. (more)
