Bermuda: Solar farm at airport to be online soon
24 August 2021 - A solar farm at the airport could be operational soon, the government said yesterday [23 August]. The six megawatt solar farm, made up of 24,000 panels on a 19-acre disused runway known as the Finger, was expected to be up and running by the end of last year. Walter Roban, the Minister of Home Affairs, said some of the delay was because the development was the first of its kind in Bermuda. (more)

Bermuda: Greenrock holds Eco-School Award Ceremony
23 June 2016 - Greenrock recently held their annual Eco-School Award Ceremony, with the programme seeing fifteen schools participate, impacting approximately 5,000 students. Shadow Minister of Education Lovitta Foggo said, 'The Greenrock initiative is an excellent programme which creates awareness and an appreciation in our young students regarding the environment, it's fragility, and the measures which can be taken to counter negative impacts.' In Bermuda, officials vow to conserve Sargasso Sea
12 March 2014 - The US, Britain, Monaco, and the Azores have joined Bermuda in signing a non-binding declaration to collaborate on conservation of the Sargasso Sea, the ecologically rich waters in the mid-Atlantic. Premier Craig Cannonier says Bermuda believes it is 'our responsibility to lead the stewardship of this unique marine ecosystem'. (more)

Ocean advocates push for Bermuda marine reserve
9 August 2013 - Officials from the Pew Charitable Trusts and one of famed underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau's grandsons were in Bermuda on Thursday calling for the creation of the Atlantic's biggest marine reserve. The ambitious 'Blue Halo' plan would create a vast reserve in ecologically rich waters between the tiny mid-Atlantic territory's coastal fishing areas and its 200-mile (322-kilometer) exclusive economic zone boundary. Philippe Cousteau believes the plan would boost tourism, Bermuda's top economic driver along with offshore financial services. (more)

Rare bird born on reserve in Bermuda
18 April 2009 - A fuzzy fledgling of Bermuda's national bird, spotted on a secluded offshore sanctuary this week, may help bring the rare creature back from the brink of extinction. The baby bird -- found nestled in an artificial concrete burrow on protected Nonsuch Island by scientists -- is the first recorded Bermuda petrel chick seen on the 16-acre (6-hectare) site for centuries, Bermuda's Department of Conservation said Thursday.
