Promising research on Transcendental Meditation in treatment of anxiety, PTSD: Dr Norman Rosenthal
by Global Good News staff writer

Continuing his address during the 9 October webinar on 'Overcoming Depression in a Recession,' psychiatrist Dr Norman Rosenthal discussed the effect of Transcendental Meditation on anxiety, which often accompanies depression. 'There is a lot of evidence to show that Transcendental Meditation may be helpful there as well,' he said.
He has conducted a pilot study on one form of anxiety: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. According to Dr Rosenthal, even in this small study, there is encouraging pilot data—which replicates what was found many years ago, in a study on Vietnam veterans who were treated with Transcendental Meditation (TM) versus conventional psychotherapy. 'TM really did seem to be superior,' he said.
'If there is one theme I would like to bring forward here, it is the opportunity that Transcendental Meditation offers—not just to regular folks, which I think it does: it just does so many good things in so many ways—but also to those who are distressed, either by depression or anxiety.'
Dr Rosenthal explained the 'fight or flight' response to stress, adding that Transcendental Meditation is known to settle the nervous system in a very profound way. He commented that 'perhaps this is one way that Transcendental Meditation could be helpful in depression . . . and act as a kind of ''circuit breaker'': to retreat into yourself twice a day, in a calm and positive way, may break that vicious cycle of negativity that is part of depression.
'These are the questions I look forward to seeing explored in the months and years to come, and I am happy to a part of that story,' he concluded.
