Diet trends; organic foods go mainstream
Health & Medicine Week Translate This Article
5 July 2004
On 5 July 2004 Health & Medicine Week reported:
Organic products are gaining widespread popularity and demand in both health food as well as mainstream stores. Stores find that it is profitable to go organic.
Global Good News service views this news as a sign of rising positivity in the fields of environment and business, documenting the growth of life-supporting, evolutionary trends.
The organic market is growing rapidly. The Health and Medicine Week article reported that one out of every ten food dollars in the US is spent on organic and natural foods. Organic food now accounts for approximately $43 billion of the $433 billion net food spending in the United States. This marks a rise of 72 per cent in the last five years.
Jon Hauptman, vice president of Willard Bishop Consulting firm that specializes in the food industry, says 'It's no longer the fringe crowd that is buying these products. It's everyday consumers across virtually all demographic groups.'
Large mainstream food companies have been buying organic companies and product lines since the 1990's. These companies include name-brands such as General Mills which owns Small Planet Foods and the Cascadian Farm label, Coca-Cola which owns Odwalla juices, Pepsi's subsidiary Frito-Lay which markets organic tortilla chips, Kraft which owns the Boca Burger brand, and Kellogg's which produces Kashi cereals.
Corinne Shindelar, executive director of the Midwest Purchasing Cooperative, said regarding the rise of organic foods, 'The more interest there is, the more market there is for the farmers' and growers' products. A rising tide lifts all boats'.
Co-ops and national chains of natural and organic foods are also growing. For example, the Whole Foods Market chain of Austin, Texas, has 160 stores and the company's sales grew from $1.57 billion in 1999 to $3.1 billion in 2003.
A nationwide caravan, called the Organic Natural Experience (ONE), is being launched this year to further promote organic foods. It is being sponsored by well-known health food brands such as Annie's Pasta, the Cliff Bar, and Odwalla juices. The caravan will go from Boston to Seattle, stopping at different locations across the country.
