Thailand - A number of international rock climbers, enthusiasts, and tourists are expected join the upcoming sixth Krabi Rock and Fire International Contest, to be held in the southern province of Krabi.

The three-day event will take place at Railay Beach and Ton Sai Bay in Mueang district from 21 to 23 April 2014.

More than 30 teams of adventurous tourists from the world over are expected to take part in this event, which is the biggest rock climbing competition in Thailand. Thanks to its tall and challenging limestone peaks, Krabi boasts some of the best rock climbing in the world. At Railay Beach alone, there are more than 600 rock climbs, most of which are world-class.

Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Thawatchai Arunyik said that the Krabi Rock and Fire International Contest has become increasingly popular over recent years and it helps promote Krabi as a fun destination for thrill seekers as well as beach lovers. Rock climbers love it here as the climbs up the limestone peaks are not only diverse and challenging, but also offer some of the most beautiful scenery in the world to enjoy, once they have scaled the heights.

He said that Railay Beach in Krabi is recognized as one of the most amazing locations for warm weather climbers. The area was recently named by TripAdvisor as one of Asia's top-ten beautiful beaches, as well.

One of Thailand's southern seaside provinces and popular destinations, Krabi has been included in the list of '52 Paces to Go in 2014' by The New York Times. The town of Krabi lies just a 45-minute boat ride across the Andaman Sea from Phuket. Since the province is situated near the prime tourist destination of Phuket Island, it has been regarded as an alternative for tourists turning from the crowded province of Phuket.

Krabi boasts not only beautiful beaches, but also many scenic islands, particularly Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta. Its international airport is the second largest in the Andaman group of provinces, after Phuket, in terms of the number of passengers and the volume of goods transported through it.

Known as the 'Emerald of the Andaman Sea,' Krabi has great potential for further growth in tourism because of its readiness in terms of natural beauty suitable for accommodating the high-end market. As the province is becoming more popular, it is expected to record 3.1 million tourist arrivals in 2014, generating 48.7 billion baht.

Designated as a tourist city in 1985, Krabi has been chosen as a suitable site for location shooting by many filmmakers. The province has set a vision to become an international tourist city and a center for sustainable agro-industry.
